The Problem (Discovery)

COVID-19 has strained many businesses in the food and entertainment industry.

The best in class international solutions are often expensive, complex and inaccessible to the majority of South African businesses.

South African specific solutions often do not exist to address the wider demographic that exist locally.

Large, untapped and highly fragmented market with limited access to support from government or the private sector.

Common User Goals

  1. Ordering a variety of food, from the street vendor to the most upmarket restaurant, just need to feed my cravings
  2. As a restaurant, reach new and under served customers at affordable prices
  3. As a chef, allow customers to order custom food that is not listed on the menu
  4. Get food delivered while it is still fresh and hot, well packaged / presented.

Common User Frustrations

  1. Unable to order from local restaurants and kitchens.
  2. Commission is too high with other providers.
  3. The prices are to high compared to ordering directly from the restaurant.

The Solution

Providing a platform to allow the underserved market to gain wider share of the market. Fhood will provide the most diverse offering to customers

Brand Identity

Client was pretty straight-forward with what he wanted as a logo, a food container that is used in local shops and food trucks. With Adobe Illustrator I was able to spin up an illustrator of what we refer to as a “laptop container”

Color scheme: Black and Gold / Yellow, speaks to the Afro-centricity and gold of Afro-wealth and yellow to symbolise brightness and intelligence.

Before settling with the product name of Fhood, which I had suggested, with the slogan: “Food for the Hood”, we moved from SpazaBox.

High Fidelity Wireframe & Prototype

Observing from the current international solutions, one of the User Pain-Points, is deciding what to eat.

The conventional way suggests your favourite (most ordered) restaurants, and suppresses the unknown restaurants, only displaying the popular restaurants first

Fhood is quite different, and aims to promote all types and levels of businesses that join the platform. People are not looking for restaurants when purchase but are looking for “something to eat” all the time.

I went ahead and prioritised food categories / types more than restaurants, which helps users explore different options around them, whilst exposing the smaller restaurants and food trucks.

Software Engineering

Yes, I know code too 😎 //An intermediate software developer

ionic cordova run android –livereload –consolelogs

Developing your own design is fun, with sleepless nights, I was a team on my own with some assistance with a RESTful API that connected to the front-end of the application I was responsible for, we also used Google services such as geolocation.

Ionic 5 allows me to code once and deploy to both android and iOS, the application was ready in about 8 months.

Deployment

Running that ionic cordova command will start up  either android studio / XCode (android & iOS) depending on the arguments

Herein are iOS emulator devices of the application
